Island of Thirasai, steps and Donkey track. - Santorini
Thirasia is the small inhabited island directly opposite Fira. The island was hit by the earthquake of 1956, and one of the villages has remained deserted since that time.

You are most likely to visit the island as part of one of the boat trips from the port of ATHINIOS, which stop at the Volcano of New Kameni, the hot suplhurous waters of Palia Kameni, and then on to Thirasia for a rest stop, maybe a meal and or a donkey trip to the town high up on the top.


Income from tourists taking this trip seems to form most of the income for the few inhabitants of the island, along with some fishing. When visiting it is possible to have the feeling that this is an island waiting for the next tremor. Dangerously overhanging rocks look ominous abve the harbour, where an air of decay seems to pervade.

However, a good meal and drinks can be had a this spot - bring along some real cash, as few, if any of the establishments seem to accept payment by card.

Our trip of October 2005 arrived here just as the skies clouded over - although great views can still be had of the main island of Santorini.
