Pyrgos village is about 8 kilometers to the south of the captial, Fira.
Most of the village is built on top of a hill, so offers great views across the island. Pyrgos was the capital of the island until the 1800's and you can see the old Venitian Castle in the centre of the village. The village has a large number of churches (over 30), and lots of opportunities to photograph the blue domes!
The village streets follow the shape of the hill, so as you make your way up to the castle you may feel as if you are in a maze combined with a helter-skelter. The village is a pretty place, well worth a visit, just to wander round the streets, and get lost, then found again and then visit the folk museum, and of course get some great panoramic photos of the island of Santorini.
